Dusty, gravelly. Main soil in vicinity is Tifton sandy loam.
Associates included Digitaria sanguinalis, Cenchrus echinatus, Richardia scabra, Verbena rigida, and Croton glandulosus.
Course long-stemmed, sprawling vine. Corollas light yellow, those of staminate fls. 5-lobed. Anthers free, of curious, complex shape. Pistillate fls. with young frs. and peduncles pale yellowish green. Ripe frs. ovoid to oblong, to ca. 60 mm long and 35 mm wide, short-prickly, faintly furrowed, pale green (some more yellowish), on elongated, crooked peduncles. Pulp pale yellowish-grayish green; pallid seeds tinted with same color. Lvs. and stems more or less scabrous. Lvs. a light, sublustrous green, paler underneath. Stems and small tendrils pale green. Some stems to ca. 6-7 ft. long.
(Comments: Possibly the second state record. There is a spcimen from Tift County. This taxon occurs from Florida to Texas to South America. Of cult. origin; probably derived from an African sp., C. longipes Hook.) Repl. 6.
